Monday 10-1: staying on the island

Greetings, beautiful mutants!

Today, I want you to imagine this:  you're on an island. You're about to be voted off the island. Surrounding the island are shark infested waters crammed with lime green jello, through which strange little men in boats are patrolling, who will attempt to sink you with large rubber mallets. The water itself has a strange chemical that will turn your skin bright orange and render you unable to speak any language besides ancient Egyptian, and your only topic of conversation will be whether the Kardashians are good at algebra.

You will NOT make it to the mainland

Your only hope to stay on the island is to create a document named after yourself, plus the word "Survivor"

Your full name will go at the top of this document, along with your email address

You will populate this document with a bullet list

Each bullet item will be at least two complete sentences

Each set of two complete sentence must explain in detail some reason that you must be allowed to stay on the island

Each reason must be something that you can do, some quality that you have, some qualification that you can point to, or something that you have already done in the past, OR are currently doing these days

All text must be formatted with something other than Times New Roman size 12 plain black text

I will only award a limited number of points for this assignment, so the more reasons you have than your peers, the more of their points you will take from them.

Make sure to upload it to Box.com when you are finished

cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday 9-25: 56 Americans

Today, you will be working towards two distinct goals:

A) You will be learning some new and interesting techniques in Microsoft word. But first, you have to download the file found HERE

Make sure that you SAVE this file onto your desktop

You got it? OK, then lets get going!

1) The first thing we're going to do to this document is to make all the words in it bigger, and in a different "font" or type style. You do this by clicking on the "EDIT" command at the top left corner of your screen, then going to click "SELECT ALL". Then you choose a font and a size from their lists at the top center of the screen

You can make it any size between 16 and 30. You can choose any font except "Times New Roman" or some other font that I cannot read, such as Wing Dings

Make sure you click off the words once you are done!

2) The next thing we are going to do is we are going to make at least five words in it ALL CAPS. You make a word ALL CAPS by selecting it, then holding the SHIFT key while clicking on the "F3" key at the top of your keyboard

Here are some of the words you may choose from to make into ALL CAPS...your list may vary, but make it every bit as extensive:

Jefferson
Adams
British
declaration
Henry
Hamilton
Franklin
tyranny
independence
Livingstone
Rutledge

If you have trouble finding words, use the "FIND" feature by clicking on the "EDIT" command at top of the screen, then clicking on "FIND"

3) You can also change a whole bunch of words all at once using the "FIND AND REPLACE" method. You do this by clicking on the "EDIT" command at top of the screen, then clicking on "FIND AND REPLACE" You can use this to make every "the" in the article
ALL CAPS, SIZE 20 AND PINK, FOR EXAMPLE

When you are done, SAVE all your changes and then upload this new file to your "shared" folder on Box.com!

Cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday 9-25: Bookmarks of your very own

Okily dokily..... now that you (presumably) know how to insert bookmarks into a document, I want you to practice with a document of your very own. Yesterday, I sent each of you an email letting you know to bring in a computer file of your own... the BIGGER, the better.

Now it's time to put that to good use. You will need to create at least 17 bookmarks in this document, each one being some truly important term that is a part of your document

And here's the new twist: each spot that you bookmark -- the paragraph where the information is contained -- must be made (by you)

MUCH BIGGER AND MORE COLORFUL

than the surrounding text

OK, by golly let's get going :-)

Cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday 9-25: Who was Geisel?

Greetings one and all!

Today, you are going to begin work by downloading another Libre Text document to your folder. (This one won't be blank) The file is found
and you must SAVE it to your computer, with YOUR name at the beginning of the filename. Leave the "TheodorGeisel" at the end of the filename

Open up that file and you will see that this file is about 13 pages long... a little bit of reading material. With this much reading material, its possible to forget where you found something. So, today we are going to learn how to insert "bookmarks" into this document. Here's how you do that:

A) Use the "FIND" feature (click on the EDIT command then FIND, or use "CTRL +F" keys) to look for this word:
tetrameter

B) The "find" feature will show up either at the bottom or on the corner of the screen...its a little textbox where you can type in the word you are looking for

C) When you get to the word
tetrameter

, select the whole word by double clicking on it

D) Go the to the top of the screen and click the "INSERT" command then go down to where it says "BOOKMARK" and click on that

E) Underneath where it says "bookmark name" type in the name of this bookmark --> you could call it "tetrameter"

F) click the "OK" button

G) Make sure that you've done it right by clicking on the "F5" key at the top of the keyboard. This pops up a list, of which "bookmarks" is a part of it. There should be a "+" sign next to it... clcik that, and you should see "tetrameter"

H) Repeat this process for at least five of the words in this list. Make sure that you give each one a different name:

Birdsies
Mulberry
Snafu
California
Lindbergh
Spaulding
Flit
Grinch
Cat
Memorial
Moosilauke
Horton
Yertle

I) Make sure that ALL your bookmarks work by repeating step G

When you're done, we will move on to part 2
Cheers,
Mr. L

Mon 9-24 : ad space, part two

OK then, there are only two other elements you will need to add to your...ad Here they are:

A) At the bottom of the screen, in the middle of the drawing toolbar, you will see a white box with a letter "A", followed by some small lines. This is the "TextBox" button. Click it, and draw a textbox somewhere on your Word document

B) Unlike your pictures, a textbox can be dragged anywhere you want right away. The trick is to put something that you will say about your product in that textbox, some sort of slogan. For example, the Nike slogan is "just do it". McDonald's has "I'm lovin' it". Mac has "think different"

It should be a short phrase, or sentence like that

C) You will want to add a second textbox, one which includes more detailed information: something about the product, or where to order it, or a local store where you can pick it up. The text in this textbox should be  somewhat smaller, less colorful...that way it doesn't distract from the "wow factor"

D) Also, you will need to put some kind of background color or pattern, so use the FORMAT - PAGE command to get that done

When you are finished, please upload your work to your shared folder on Box.net

Cheers,
Mr. L

Mon 9-24: How to get Ahead in Advertising

Greetings, one and all and everyone of you!

Today, we are going to follow up the "front page news" files you made last week by using several different tools to make a Libre Text document look like an ad from your paper. You will need to download the following to your folder, right now:

A) The Libre Office document found HERE

B) A picture of some product or other -- could be hi tops, could be a car, could be perfume, could be anything. The choice of product is up to you, but it must be legal and school appropriate

C) A picture of the famous person who will be endorsing your product. This could be an actual person, or a fictional character. Again, someone who is appropriate for school, please!

Once you have all three in place, open the Libre file you just downloaded. Yup, its blank. You will fill it, but FIRST, you need to open the "Drawing" toolbar by clicking on the VIEW command at the top of the screen, then clicking on TOOLBARS, then click on the "Drawing" toolbar. You'll need it!

1) OK, now to get down to business: use the INSERT -- PICTURE -- FROM FILE command to get the picture of your celebrity sponsor into your word document.

2)Click on that picture then click where it says "Format" at the top of the screen, then go to the bottom of that menu and click "Picture"

3) Click the "Wrap" tab

4) click the choice that says "THROUGH", then click OK

This makes it possible to move your picture anywhere you want, and it will not displace any text that you put in

5) Insert the product you're sponsoring, and follow the same steps as above to be able position the product right where you want it.

6) At the bottom of the screen, you will see your "Drawing" toolbar. If you don't, then just click on the VIEW command, then go to Toolbars, then Drawing

At the left end of that toolbar, there should be some button that looks like a "talk bubble"...this is the callout command. click it, then click the callout shape of your choice.

7) These are also known as "talk bubbles" and you will need to use at least one to have your celebrity sponsor say something about the product you are selling. Just draw one near that person's head, then fill it with what they should be saying

work on that, then lets finish up in part two
Mr. L

Thursday September 20: Fit To Print!

Greetings one and all,

Today,we are going to be working on a group project. To get started, you all need to do the following:

A)set up a group of either two or three people
B) have just one person in each group download the file found HERE

C) have another person in the group send me an email with your names and the phrase "group effort" in the subject line

OK, you ready? Good, let's get going!
You will notice that this document is setup to look like the front page of a newspaper.  (A newspaper is the funny tree-based things old people used to read before there were blogs.)

BUT.......it needs to have stuff added to it. Like a slogan that you guys come up with. A picture to put in as a logo. There's a place to put a front page story, and a picture to go with that story, and some textboxes to make "callouts" And of course, the text is this dreadful "Times New Roman" awfulness....YUCK!!!!!

You have to make changes to all this stuff. I give you free reign to make any changes you like, as long as these rules are followed:

A) you keep the basic format I've setup -- in other words, don't remove the place to put a logo just because you don't want to make one

B) Make your paper appeal to a particular audience. Who would be your "readers"?  Old? Young? Hip? Square? Sports fans? Fashion followers? Computer geeks? People who are into money and finance? Politics and current events? Science news?

It's all up to you!

C) Make sure you put in at least several different types of "front page" items..... the BEGINNINGS of different articles. PLUS, you should put in small little snippets, like the local weather, diet tips, ads for various products or events happening in your region

D) Include images, callouts and shapes, banners, pictures culled from "real" news sites etc etc

E) Fer cryin' out loud, make it look good. I'm an old, balding punk rocker: I'm so un-hip its a wonder my rear end doesn't fall off.  If you can't "out-style" me, you're in sorry shape

F) ALL YOUR WORK MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE!

Ok, time to get 'er done!

Mr. L

Tuesday September 18: part three

For the last part of today's excursion into computer drama, you will be inserting a custom made image into the top cell of your table. The idea is that it's supposed to be an image that looks like you.

Here is where you go to create that image:http://www.sp-studio.de/

Please bear in mind that your image can be as crazy as you'd like, but it still needs to be

SCHOOL APPROPRIATE

cheers,
Mr. L

PS If it doesn't work with the "Safari" browser try using Chrome

PPS When you hit the SAVE button after your image is finished, it might look like nothing has happened....but it HAS. Just check your download folder :-)

Tuesday September 18: part two

This part will get a little tricky, so listen up pilgrims!

A) First, select all of the words that describe you. Then make them an actual list by clicking on FORMAT, then "BULLETS & NUMBERING"

B) If you want to be a lamer, well then, yeah, pick one of the standard bullets

C) If you wanna be cool like me, click on the "Options" tab then click on the "Character" button.  Pick out a character, and make it your bullet

D) Once you've chosen a bullet, you will need to make at least three custom colors.

E) The way you do that is to click on TOOLS then OPTIONS.
Click on the "+" next to Libre Office, then click on "Colors"

F) Click on the EDIT button... Then, set your "red" "green" and "blue" values to whatever looks good

G) Click OK, then click ADD.  Then, name your color whatever you'd like

H) Repeat this twice. That's a total of three custom colors

I) Apply one custom color to your words, one color to your background

cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 18: all about you part one

Today, our main objective is to create a Text document in Libre Office that makes use of the following elements:

Tables

Lists

Images  (Self created)

Custom Hex colors

You've already used tables, so the first step should be easy:

Create and save a text document that has a table with one column and three rows... three nice little boxes stacked one on top of the other

The document should be named after yourself

In the middle box, type in the following phrase:

"Thirteen words or short phrases that describe  [your name goes here]"

In the bottom box, type thirteen words or short phrases that describe you.

MAKE SURE THOSE WORDS ARE ARRANGED IN A VERTICAL COLUMN. YUP, STACKED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.

When everyone is et with this, we'll move forward

cheers,
Mr. L

Mr. L

Monday September 14: Last Call for all Portal links

Greetings one and all,

Today, before we begin, this is my last call for all unfinished links on PortaPortal. That means EVERY assignment involving putting links on your PortaPortal account needs to be completed. Today.

Thursday Sept 13: Formatting in Libre office

Now that you're done linking, its time to do some formatting:

A) Select the words you've written, and make them a different font than what you've got, especially if its that wretched "Times New Roman"

B) So sorry, but the plain black text color has gotta GO

C) Ditto for the standard size 12...Something different please!

D)  Likewise, choose a different background color One way to do this is to click on the FORMAT command at the top, then go to "PAGE"  then click on the "Background" tab

E) If you're up for it, see if you can figure out how to use an image as the background instead of the picture

cheers,
Mr. L

PS If we've run out of time at this point, make sure you upload your new file to Box.com

Thursday September 13: Combining Images and Text Using Tables

Greetings, one and all:

By this point in the class, you should have the following tools:

  • a folder to store stuff on Box.com
  • an account on PortaPortal to store websites
You should also have the following resources

  • a topic, something you want to write about
  • some websites about that topic
  • Some information you've written about that topic from each of those websites
  • some pictures about that topic
Now its time to take it to the next level.

Assuming that you have everything done from above -- and I WILL be checking -- here is what I want you to do to start putting everything together

Crank up a copy of Libre Office Writer on your computer (I'll help if you need help finding it)

Insert  a table in it that has at least 20 cells in it... you could have 2 rows and 10 columns, or vice versa, or any setup you like...again, I'll demo how to do that

Remember those eight images about your topic you were supposed to put onto Box.com for safe keeping?
Get 'em and put one image each into 8 of the cells in your table

Use the other cells to put in information you have ALREADY found, along with the EXACT website address where you've found each particular piece of information.

In other words, in each cell, put a website address, and the three complete sentences worth of info you found there

So remember: in this Libre Office text document, you're making a table, filling it with pictures, information and website addresses

and make it look awesome :-)

cheers,

Mr. L

Tuesday September 11: Facts and Proof (again) part two

The next part of this exercise is pretty simple: you need to gather some images that have to do with all the information you have gathered so far. Here is what you need to do:

A) Find some images

B) Make sure they're relevant -- they must have something to do with your topic

C) Make sure they are school appropriate

D) Upload the really good ones to your folder at Box.com

E) Underneath each image, post a comment about the picture. At least one complete sentence explaining to me what the picture is, what's happening in it, why it is an important part of your topic

F) Make sure that I know that these pictures are about this topic. You might want to create a separate folder INSIDE your main Box.com folder. Just sayin' :-)

cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 11: part one, continuing where left off yesterday

Greetings children!

In our all too short class from yesterday, we conducted a final vote on the blog name, had a cyber-based "scavenger hunt" among the websites of all your classmates, and then we began

THIS PROCESS -->

1) Create and save a new Text document. Name it after your name, plus the phrase "facts and proof"

2) Decide which links you want to use. What do YOU want to explore further?

3) Follow up one of those links. Can you find at least two worthwhile pieces of information on that webpage?

4) If the answer is yes, then type up that information into your text document. Don't try to impress me by using lots of big words, and DO NOT just "copy and paste" from the site. Just tell me what information you have found. At least three complete sentences worth for a start

5) Underneath that information, ad the website address you got it from. THAT information you can do a "copy-paste" on.

This document MUST be saved in your folder on Box.com. Today, for the first part of the class, you must work to complete this first part of the project, where you have not less than

EIGHT WEBSITE ADDRESSES

inside this document. That means you will have at least three complete sentences of information, times eight websites, for a total of

24 COMPLETE SENTENCES OF INFORMATION

Are you there yet? If not, why are you wasting time reading this last sentence? Get goin', buckaroo!

cheers,
Mr. L

Monday, September 10, 2012

Monday September 10: Facts and Proof

If you are reading this, it can mean that you have:

A) voted

B) thought up some really cool stuff you'd like to do

C) Checked out your classmates websites, and found some good links

Now I would like you to begin putting all this potential information to good use. Here is what I would like to see you do:

6) If you come across a website that isn't all that helpful, kick it to the curb and get another

7) If you run out of websites on the topic you like, get some more. Add them to your portal. Make use of them

8) You should compile at least eight different websites using this method.

9) Stick to your topic.....just ONE topic.  A school appropriate topic

10) Let's do it, let's get it done!

cheers,
Mr. L

Monday September 10: Gold Silver bronze

BEFORE WE BEGIN:

For the first time ever, there is a need for a runoff vote for a blog name. Please go cast your vote for one of the two finalists by going clicking THIS LINK

When you are done voting, you may resume your normally scheduled classroom experience, already in progress -->

ALL righty then!

Children, now that you have lots and lots of links and categories, I'd like us all to play a game that I call
"A classwide scavenger hunt".

Here is what you'll need to do:

A) Create a new category called "Scavenger"

B) Go to MY guest account at Portaportal, found here:
http://guest.portaportal.com/mrlarue2013

C) Search through any of the links you find there. There are many students in this class, who have compiled a wide variety of interesting and informative websites

D) Find the three that you like best, and add them to your new category

E) Make sure to add THEIR title for this website

F) In the description, list the name of the person who created this link in the first place -- give 'em some props, people!

Cheers,
Mr. L

Thursday September 6: I wish Morgan Freeman narrated my life

I'm not sure what it says about me, but one of my favorite movies that is NOT sci fi or an action film is "The Bucket List". For those of you who don't know, it's a movie about fulfilling important life goals and dreams, while you still have time.

For this assignment, you will need to collect between five and eight websites that have to do with really "wow, that would be so COOL to do that" goals of yours. For each website gathered, make sure you have as specific a description as possible about what it is. If you're not sure what I mean, let me know and I'll show you the items on my list as an example

cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 4: yet more cool stuff with PortaPortal

OK, now if you're reading this, you have a bunch of categories with tons of links, all of which you KNOW work, because YOU have tested them.

Now, you will need to use your portal account to create a very special computer file. This computer file -- once you have created it -- will need to be uploaded to the folder you share with me at Box.com

Here is what you will do:

A) Get back into the "Advanced" part of your portal

B) click on the button marked "Export Portal" way down towards the bottom... it will create a webpage that has ALL your links on it

C) The tricky part will be FINDING this new file... every system has a place where downloaded files go...you will have to look to see where it went on yours.

D) Once you do find it, you will need to upload it to Box.com

Cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 4: new category, your choice

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy there!

Time permitting, I would like each of you to set up a completely new category. It's up to you what goes in it, or what it is about, so long as its School Appropriate, AND is something that has nothing to do with anything else we've done so far.

Name the new category "SOMETHING NEW" and then fill it with seven new websites

Th-th-th-that's all folks!

cheers,
Mr. L

PS Be it known, anything you haven't finished in PortaPortal, you need to get it taken care of tutto pronto.... very soon, we will be moving on to another topic

Tuesday September 4: more cool stuff with PortaPortal

OK, so now you have a Portal account, and a BUNCH of categories, with lots and lots of websites in 'em. But how do you know that all of your links work? Well, you could be a N00b, and click every single link to make sure it works....OR, you could be cool like Mr. LaRue, and use the PortaPortal "Advanced" features!

Here is what you do:

A) At the top right, where all the buttons are, click on the advanced button... it looks like this:

B) When you get into the Advanced section, there will be a text header about halfway down that says "Test Links". Underneath will be a button that says "Begin Test"

C) Click that button. The system will begin testing all your links

D) Good links will get a green checkmark. Links that are "bad" get a red X. They might not actually BE bad, but just to make sure, actually click on each link that has gotten a red X. If they work anyway, just ignore the test. If they DON'T work, you will need to edit your links, so get crackin'!

Cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 4: A new name for our website

Greetings once again,

In the past, I have set up blog-based websites for each of my classes, shared the website address with my students, and after they have become comfortable using it, allowed them to rename the TITLE of the blog. Not the website address, just the title at the top.

Right now, our class website is called "Mr L Computer Apps"... a perfect name if you're having trouble sleeping at night. What I need for each of you to do is to send me an email with some ideas of your own about what our website should be called.

Make sure to put your first and last name in the subject line, plus the phrase "blog name choices"

In the body of the email, send me as many ideas as you would like, but try for at least four. Just to help you along, here are some actual "no I'm not kidding they actually voted for that one" examples:

Noise Aquarium

Code Monkeys

Dissonant Disturbances

Krakatoa's Revenge

The Skunk Werx

Deafening Silence

Hellen Keller's Traffic Dodgers

We Heart Bald

Vitamin E

Feeble Minded Pandas

So, with this in mind, send me some ideas of your own by email. I will do my best to sift through 'em, and come up with some finalists... next time we meet, you will have an actual vote, and from there I will work over next weekend to declare a winner :-)

cheers,
Mr. L

Tuesday September 4: G33k$, set up YOUR categories!

Greetings, O most amazing ones!

Today, the first part of our class will be devoted to making and populating a category of YOUR choosing, or to using Portaportal . You will remember that last week, I had asked each of you to email me your idea of what you had in mind. Those of you who have done so, I have already emailed you back.

Those of you who have NOT done so, you need to email me now with an idea of your own, as well as an explanation as to why you think it's OK to not do an assignment I have given you. It had better be a darned good explanation too, good enough to justify me not chopping your grade in half for this assignment.

Let's do it, lets get it done!

cheers,
Mr. L
